Open Questions: When To Never Do Article Submissions
Got a question in my E-Commerce SEO Checklist post from Rania, who didn’t leave me a link for credit.
“4. Steal your competitors articles and product reviews and do article distribution.”
You recommend STEALING articles from competitors as an advanced SEO tactic?! Seriously?!
How about recommending that users create their own unique content in order to increase their site traffic and ranking.
Suggesting that people steal competitors work really says a lot about you- and your company.
Good luck.
I know you’re only trying to make a point but I’ll accept the question anyway.
Why would I steal my competitors articles for article distribution instead of writing/sharing my own?
The answer is much more than a time or ethics response.
1. Unnecessary Competition A typical article distribution involves submitting to around 1-5k worth of article directories and E-zines. Any time you submit the same piece of content to that many sites it creates unnecessary competition. This is especially true if your site is new. The article directories and ezines are old, your site is new. They win. While they usually won’t take you out on the primary keywords especially with your site linked in the article, they can snag a lot of unknown positions in your longtail and mediumtailed phrases pushing your site down and losing you an unknown bit of long term traffic. This can go all the way up to a worse case scenario. Last year when Acai Berry was a hot niche a lot of people were seoing for the term and many did article distributions. While their sites never made it into the top 10, the articles they submitted came closer. So when Google did some manual reviews and bitch slapped a bunch of rebill promoters and affiliate pages on the term most of what was left was the articles. All ranking and for awhile there while everyone else readjusted left a bunch of article directories taking all that good traffic. The first thing the article directory owners did of course was edit the articles and take out the links to the authors websites and throw in their own affiliate links. Lesson learned, but that brings us to point two.
2. Don’t Do It Unless Others Are ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE IN A SMALL NICHE! God damn, I see people do this all the time. They find a nice little niche with nearly zero competition and in the miniscule effort they have to put into ranking they realize the only way they know how to build backlinks is to article submit. They get flooded out and cry. Uhhg. The point is, same as point one. Don’t do it unless others are. I follow the rule outlined in SEO Empire, if you want to win Match and Exceed. If it becomes a problem for you to maintain your ranking, then submit where they submit and a bit more. So don’t submit unless you have to, but if you do make sure you…
3. Submit Your Competitors Articles Only All those same articles on thousands of sites creates a massive duplicate content penalty opportunity. So the worst choice you can make is to go through the articles published on your site and submit them. In the middle of the bad choices spectrum would be to write unique articles and submit those. Unique articles are for pulling in seo traffic and thus they belong on your site and preferably nowhere else. You throw little fits when people steal your content, why would you willingly give it out? The wisest choice is to submit your competitors articles because if you’re going to put anyone at risk for duplicate content you might as well put them not yourself. I’ve always said, there’s two ways to rank: You going up or them going down. I own about 170 article directories as part of my basement. I understand how the article game is played. People aren’t submitting articles to my sites because they want my directory to be the best smelling turd around. They want the links. I want the pages of content for link laundering and they want the links, that is what its all about and nothing more. No one owes me unique articles, nor is it doing them any favors to give them to me.
Hope that clears up the game rules for you Rania, sorry its not advanced, but there’s good reasons for everything we do. Please understand, I don’t tell people to be evil just because I enjoy watching them be evil (even though I do). There is always some form of risk whenever you are. Yet never hesitate to be evil when its a sink or swim situation, always match and exceed.

Yeah, and there is a fairly large problem with strategies like ” Submit Your Competitors Articles” Aside from being black-hat, the domain owner could be sued for copyright infringement. You might have it set to private, but that doesn’t protect you from the law.
If you’re in a competitive industry or one that is centered online, this is not a good idea.
Yes Man, Writing Articles is not at all difficult, but you know, even speech to text software gives unique articles, it really depends upon the speech you talk.
Normally, just see some articles, and then think of a new article. Article Really is a simple thing, just like advertise your product, give its advantages and disadvantages, thus it makes an article.
“How about recommending that users create their own unique content” – spin
“… in order to increase their site traffic” - A little bit off-topic, but not sure if Rania is aware of this retarded trick.
Register a domain, create a blog and post a few articles (steal). Then ask your writer(s) to create a sales copy with a link to your blog. Anchor text smth like ‘Click here…’ or ‘Read more…’ is Ok. Submit the article to ezine (or another trusted domain). Spam. Your goal is #10.
If #10 achieved, then you have two options. White-hat lazy-ass marketer’s way - develop your blog and wait until someone clicks the link in the article, visit your blog and buy smth, i.e. article – blog – commission. Or, white-hat lazy-ass marketer’s way #2 . Redirect your blog to affiliate link. You skip the ‘- blog -’ part. Obviously, article will be deleted one day.
Alex,
As google is penalizing spun content, I dont think that it will be a wise decision.
Please share your thought.
I think this is standard procedure, but I’ve never seen anyone write it down before
Can I ask what software you are using for your own directories?? You running blog network plugins or propper AD software?
Typed out a whole comment, hit submit, said my maths was wrong, so here I start again. (believe you me, my math wasn’t wrong).
I can see why Rania got his knickers in a knot, my opinion is that he’s not from around here, because if he was, he’d know how we roll here at BHS.
I’d dig to know what software you use for article directories. I found a Wordpress theme that works quite well, but when doing anything in mass, it’s not the best with Wordpress.
Step one, create good content. Step two, keep creating good content. Step three, read and comment other people’s content. Step four CREATE GOOD CONTENT
That should be it. Become the best, but not because you’ve brought them down.
I still agree with Rania- Suggesting that people steal competitors work really says a lot about you- and your company.
This is a very poorly written article that only makes me laugh at how ridiculous your company is.
You forgot to change ips before making this comment Rania.
If you want some link credit feel free to let me know. I usually give link credit whenever answering a question.
Shared computers at my office, genius.
Link credit? lol.
Thanks for the offer but I’d really rather not be affiliated with this website.
Have a nice day.
So, you go on the webbernet looking for black/grey/blue hat seo stuff and then mock a very real technique for attacking the competition because it does not meet your ethics? Are you serious?
You’re just too stupid for words, or you’re trolling, I can’t figure out which. Probably both.
This is the game and Eli actually contributes something unlike trolls like you…
Glad to see you back writing.
Please help me understand this correctly…you steal your competitors articles and do article distribution, from the article directories and E-zines do they link back to your competitors site or your own site?
Need some clarity, sorry for the ignorance.
Eli
Do you spin them a bit 1st? Most article directories would not accept an already indexed article from a competitors site surely, or do you add duplicate content to your directories??
I wish all my sites to increase their strikingness.
Eli, you mention using up to 5k targets for article submits. What sort of tool do use for this? It’s a hole I need to fill in my system and I’m not really sure how to start attacking it. I can’t see article submissions sites being generic enough to handle automated form submission unless you’ve painstakingly built bots for each one?
Hey Eli just do your thing! I try to check out your blog everyday, today I had the surprise to discover 2 new posts Continue sharing your experience and know-how as much as your pocket will let it
You’re the best, better than the rest!
Love reading your insights!
What most people (those complaining about your tactics) don’t understand is you are just openly saying what other top ranking SEOers are doing and Not talking about.
Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Mike P.S. Do you offer consulting?
“ok” is a relative term.
Is it “ok” for NFL QBs to consistently rape women, not get sentenced to jail and still make Million$ a year?
Is it “ok” for someone to illegally break into a White House dinner, not get jail time AND get their own TV show?
And you’re hear on BHS wasting valuable comment space talking about a silly article?
If the public world does not care about Big illegal things why would anyone give a second thought to a simple article?
Grow a pair and keep reading or go read the Sesame Street SEO blog on the next corner.
Mike
At first from glancing at the title I thought you were kinda wrong for this. But after reading through, especially on your third point, you are like the Sun Zhu of SEO and this is the Art of Optimization War!
It reminds me of Art of War strategy..
Awesomeness!
I just HAVE to try this.
There are a lot of ways. I get a lot of articles myself from the web spin it myself. It’s quite easy.
Make Money Online in the Philippines
I do use article sites myself sometimes. I keep the best content for my clients sites and submit the boring stuff to article directories. I never use mass submission or anything though, I look for the better directories and I do 1 unique article, per article site.
Article submission is not a bad thing. It is just the way that the majority of webmasters approach it that is bad
Never had really an idea of hat Blue-Hat SEO means…think I’ll have to give myself a trip to your blog posts.. to get more information for me to know what really Blue Hat is.
Anyways, for me, article submission plays a big role when manages a website, especially if it’s a new site. And it’s really hard to write a unique article especially when you are not that good in writing articles..
It is not that hard to make an original article, is it? If it is not, try writing an article that has a 75% - 85% original content. You may have similar ideas from one or two or more articles, at least you exceeded them, right?
Well I guess, for those who are new in article writing and article distribution should stop here for a while and read the ideas you and the other users have posted.
For a new website, I find the effective way to get organic traffic is article submission.
How can we do if we don’t submit articles to article directories when we choose article marketing as a main trategy. Actually there are some article marketing tools can help writing unique articles and submitting to article directories.
Just discovered your site, Eli.
It is awesome.
I’m going to read the whole archieve and I will be back for more.
Not sure I’m understanding this. How can submitting competitors articles create a duplicate content penality? Isn’t that called syndication? Isn’t that why anyone submits articles… to get extra hits and to hope that other people pick it up?
Ok, what am I missing? Would love to have something like this work… but at this point, I’m not seeing it.
“I own about 170 article directories as part of my basement.”
Wow! Could you please provide some hints on how to setup an articles directory?
Thanks,
Amazing, just amazing that someone somewhere thinks that stealing content is an advanced SEO tactic.
However, submitting competitor articles and penalizing them for duplicate content is not a nice thing to do. Imagine how you’d feel if someone did it to you?
To all who don’t understand this post. What happens is that you spend time and writing a 100% unique article and submit to a site. Your competitors will steal and spin it and resubmit it on the same site with their links, making your article’s value drop. So why do it?
Put the unique article on your own website or some place else. Doesn’t mean that a competitor won’t steal it also. Happens to me all the time.
His point is that if you are going to put an article out there why make it unique, it will get duplicated 100x within a year.
Love this comment: “I don’t tell people to be evil just because I enjoy watching them be evil (even though I do)”
You are one ruthless dude.
I’m a little confused on the content penalty. Doesn’t the age of the original article usually give it the most juice.
I am not sure if I understand you correctly - how is it possible to steal articles of competitors? I am new to Seo, so maybe I misunderstood you, but I’m a little bit confused.#
An yes, writning articles is really time consuming.
I think it is more about doing as much as the competition and a bit more to get the edge.
I am not sure using their articles is a great idea though.
Dave
Great thinking. Im sure its beacuse people are lazy and unoriginal. Come on people, step it up!!
A good post comes from passion and patient. Stealing other people post is just a way to show yourself as a thief
I recently started doing article submissions. This blog post helped a lot because I was struggling with how to do it in an effective manner. This blog post elaborates a lot on duplicate content, which is important to avoid.
Pissing off the Google God is bad mojo!
Interesting insights in this article which made me think…
Thank You for the share )
Great thoughts! Again, don’t do it unless your competition is doing it..
Anyone know the best plugins to do this??
My favorite plugin for doing this is WP-Robot …
Just make sure you utalize the re-write function to change the content if you are doing this!!!
Thanks Eli..
Talking about Article marketing… I cant agree more with you, we should only submit the competition ones to article directories, as they are just for traffic purposes, the unique ones we create will be for SEO rankings. Today i came across a great software to create unique articles from others, this is not spinning, this is mush better and it helps you rewrite completely the articles so you finally get a 100% new one.
You should check out, it is called Article Reviser, just google it.
Mafer Bv cures
If others are doing it, there is little that can be done to stop them.
I imagine it’s like trying to fight the tide.
Though, he did mention that if you’re in a small niche, where this isn’t common, then don’t do it.
There’s nothing that creates more of a response than something of controversy. I can see your point of view with regards to article submission. Writing content has become more challenging now than ever before with the flood of articles and other content across the Internet.
I’ll spend hours writing ‘unique articles’ and after submission notified that content looks like duplicate. Leverage is the key these days. I guess that’s what blue hat SEO is – Not All white, and definitely Black Hat. Is it?
It’s pretty much what they teach you these days: Do what your competitors do but much better. Learn from their mistakes -capitalise on in and build on their strongpoint - Be the Best –not just better.
Interesting point.
I feel it is a little unethical to abuse your competitors articles like that, but if they are doing it, or using another some other underhanded SEO method, then they should get what is coming to them.
This strategy has been around for years now. Internet marketers are employing article writers from India and the Philippines just for these types of jobs.
But they have seen great results.
Wonderful Post !
Article spinning is the key. There are softwares which can do automatic article spinning.
